When we discover and deepen our passion in Jesus we generate a celebratory passion for ministry and life. Come along to Pastor Ace's Bible Studies to hear how he thinks this can be achieved!
Our sessions will look at the character of Moses, focussing in on some of the key moments from his story: the call in Exod. 3, the golden calf incident in Exod. 32, the epiphany of Exod. 34, and the argument he has with god in Num. 11.
In each case we will look to see how we learn more about Moses, god, and ourselves through these episodes.
Join us as we go deep into the Bible and what it has to say to us today. Be part of the discussions, ask questions and think about where your following of Jesus might lead you in the next stage of your life.
The word meets the world - and it is political.
Come meet the radical Bible and the early church. A powerful story of refugees, prophets, martyrs, taxmen, fishermen, women leaders, slaves, trouble makers... and the Messiah.
These four Bible studies will seek to engage your head and heart.
Get you passionate about what evangelism, discipleship, organising and action means for us and the Uniting church in a world run by modern day Caesars and Herods.
His Bible studies will focus on engaging ‘the other’ - what does it mean to embrace the other in a search for transformation?
How can culture really be shifted and shaped by young people of faith to dream God’s dream for the planet?
And how can we all live in a strength of diversity, rather than build walls to keep the others out?
In the midst of the current worldwide refugee crisis, more people are on the move than ever before. Over 65 million people have been forced to flee from home due to conflict, persecution and poverty, with 21 million of these recognised as refugees (UNHCR, 2016). The figures are startling and come with harrowing stories of war, escape and the difficult road to protection. At present, Australia ranks number 48 among countries who are hosting refugees. As a country of over 23 million people, we currently have a refugee population of 34,503. So, are we doing our bit and are we taking our fair share of people in need? Our Government has come under fire again and again for its treatment of people seeking asylum and faced relentless criticism for its offshore detention regime and deterrence strategy. Do you think we should be doing better?
You are invited to join us for a Table Talk - where you will hear personal accounts of what it means to be a refugee and what it is like to seek asylum and start a new like in Australia. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the current policies and systems and offer up your ideas on how you think we should be treating refugees and people seeking asylum. This is your chance to have a meaningful discussion and reflect on the current situation.

Marianne is Medical Director of Uniting’s Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC), Australia’s only supervised injecting centre. It’s a unique service that seeks to meet people where they are - the only place in Australia where it’s legal to allow people in for the purpose of injecting drugs. The MSIC has been operating for over fifteen years - and it’s been shown to save lives, provide a link into other health care and support services including specialist addiction services, and reduce the spread of blood-borne viruses. Yet it remains controversial.
So Marianne is here to ask some tricky questions: Why do we think about drugs and people who use them? How do we define a drug? What is it that makes us so uncomfortable? Should we provide clean injecting equipment? Should we provide a safe space? What, if anything, should we legalise or decriminalise? Or should we “just say no” and continue to wage “war on drugs”?
Come along to ask everything you’ve ever wanted to know about drugs, to challenge and be challenged, and to participate in a lively discussion about how as a society we could do things better.
Assisting with the presentation, Stafford is the Campaigns Coordinator at Uniting’s Social Justice Forum and an experienced public campaigner, journalist, writer and performer.
Libby has been interested in human rights issues for a long time having been an active member of Amnesty International for around 30 years and TEAR (Transformation, Empowerment, Advocacy and Relief) Australia for the past twelve. She is a member of Springwood Uniting Church.
The inaugural STOP THE TRAFFIK conference she attended in 2007 in Sydney heightened her awareness that people-trafficking and slavery still occur in most countries of the world including Australia. After hearing that in India and elsewhere girls as young as four years are kidnapped to be used as slaves she decided she wanted to become involved in efforts to address people trafficking. She has been working with STOP THE TRAFFIK since 2011.
In January 2016 Libby joined a STOP THE TRAFFIK tour of India where she met with people who had been trafficked and with teams of dedicated women and men working in prevention, securing release and rehabilitation.
This session will include an introduction to people-trafficking and brief stories about the work of some of the anti-trafficking campaigners Libby met in India. We will look at STOP THE TRAFFIK’s campaigns to prevent trafficking in many corners of the world. This section will focus on what we the general public can do. The session will be interactive.
This elective will get people thinking about what they believe about God, Jesus, Creation and humanity, the Holy Spirit, Salvation, the Community of faith, Discipleship and Christian hope. What we hold to be true and what are mistaken understandings will be explored. People will be enabled to see how their beliefs connect with their behaviour and what it means to belong to the Christian community. It is based on a new book that Chris Walker is writing which will be published in 2017. The session will be an interactive one.
Did you know that meditation is part of an ancient Christian tradition?
This workshop will provide an introduction to and experience of Christian Meditation, also known as contemplative prayer, or the prayer of the heart.
In recent times a recovery of this contemplative dimension of the Christian faith has been happening. And what the Christian mystics have known for thousands of years scientists are now confirming - that meditation is good for us. It deepens our spiritual journey by bringing our distracted mind to attention in stillness, silence and simplicity.
In a fast-paced world, meditation helps us slow our busy mind and be attentive to the source of divine love within us. It helps us see ourselves and others more clearly, leading to the transformation of faith into loving action.
The World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) teaches a practice rooted in the Gospels and the Christian mystical tradition that is of powerful relevance for young people who want to live their discipleship to Jesus in a radical and simple way.
This form of prayer is now practiced by people from all walks of life all over Australia and the world, including young people and children in schools.
Run by long-time meditator and activist, Donna Mulhearn and other young Christian meditators. We are also hosting a corner in the prayer room with contemplative activities and a short meditation every hour.
The world’s problems can seem overwhelming. This workshop introduces some practical tools that can help you to take action on the issues you care about. We’ll look briefly at why we bother to care and the overall goal of our advocacy. Then we will use the Problem Tree exercise to really get to grips with the issue and Power Mapping to know who has influence over it. We will apply these tools to the issues you bring, so by the end of the session you will have a better idea of how to begin to work for change or take the next steps.

What is the essence of meditation? It’s learning to stand back and allow God to come into the forefront of your life……. The result is that we find our own place in the world. Laurance Freeman
This workshop is a brief introduction to silent meditation in the Christian tradition. It is based on the conviction that concern for justice and compassion (outer life) and contemplation (inner life), belong together. Meditation is a way of connecting more deeply with ourselves, God and the world. This workshop will explore how we can reclaim this contemplative dimension in our lives. Most importantly, we will consider the basic instruction on how to mediate and practice it in the workshop.

CHASING ASYLUM exposes the real impact of Australia’s offshore detention policies and explores how 'The Lucky Country' became a country where leaders choose detention over compassion and governments deprive the desperate of their basic human rights.
The film features never before seen footage from inside Australia’s offshore detention camps, revealing the personal impact of sending those in search of a safe home to languish in limbo.
CHASING ASYLUM explores the mental, physical and fiscal consequences of Australia’s decision to lock away families in unsanitary conditions hidden from media scrutiny, destroying their lives under the pretext of saving them.
